CHILD LIFE SERVICES

Helen Ziegler & Associates specializes in the recruitment of health care professionals to the Arabian Peninsula.

We are working with a brand new women & children’s hospital in Qatar (an affluent and modern Arab country), which is scheduled to open in early 2013 with 350 beds.  The hospital is looking for an experienced Manager of Child Life Services to develop and implement the hospital’s Child Life Program.

Ronald McDonald House© Southern Alberta is currently recruiting
for a Child Life Specialist.

The Child Life Specialist will be responsible for the psychosocial needs of the children that are staying at the Ronald McDonald House© Southern Alberta. Structured and unstructured play programs, discussion of sensitive along with a strong philosophy of family centered care are some of the goals of this position.

Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta provides a home away from home and support for sick children and their families. The purpose of the House has remained the same: keeping families together while the child is being treated for illness in a compassionate and comfortable, home-like atmosphere.

Position Responsibilities:
The Child Life Specialist will provide group and individual therapeutic support sessions for children, teens and families who have a parent with cancer.

  • Oversee psychosocial needs of children staying at the House
  • Provide support and resources to families
  • Monitor significant decision-making
  • Assess developmental, emotional responses to children with illness or sibling of child with illness
  • Create opportunities for structured and unstructured play programs
  • Create opportunities for children for self-mastery, self-expression, learning and peer interaction
  • Work towards normalizing child’s experience away from home
  • Maintain normal living patterns and experiences with children at the House
  • Discussion of medical and sensitive issues with children
  • Develop a working partnership with the hospital if child is receiving medical care
  • Program creation
  • Advocate for child’s and family needs
  • Facilitate normalizing activities
  • Other duties as assigned/developed

Requirements:

  • in child related field
  • Eligible for certification or are certified with Child Life Council
  • Family centered care philosophy
  • Strong commitment to integrating research into practice
  • Previous experience with children and/or families with medical/special needs
  • Effectively disseminate new knowledge
  • In collaboration, effectively train volunteers in Child Life programming
  • Experience in managing and delivering programs
  • High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and e-mail required
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills
  • Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to staff and client privacy
  • Proven assessment skills
  • Proven critical thinking and decision making skills
  • A combination of skills and education will be taken into consideration

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Child Life Specialist will provide group and individual therapeutic support sessions for children, teens and families who have a parent with cancer.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (include but are not limited to)

  • Facilitate group sessions helping children ages 5+ meet other children coping with similar experiences
  • Facilitate individual sessions helping children and youth understand and cope with a parent’s illness
  • Identify, document and implement child life activities appropriate to member’s needs and developmental level
  • Provide consultation to parents/caregivers related to the needs of children coping during crisis
  • Manage and maintain individuals’ records (contact information, registration, participation, next steps etc.)
  • Plan and implement special events occasionally as well as help to maintain and identify play/activity materials.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to ensure optimal care
  • Participate in programmatic and clinical supervision provided by the Wonders & Worries Staff as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY COMPETENCIES:
Education: Master's degree in child life or a related field, and current Child Life Professional Certification by the Child Life Council are required.

Experience and knowledge:

  • Minimum of two years of experience as a child life specialist in a hospital setting, preferably oncology
  • Demonstrated ability of working effectively with children, teens and parents
  • Demonstrated experience working within a supportive care model providing person focused care
  • Proven experience facilitating support groups or individuals
  • Strong client service orientation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as strong written and oral communication abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment, including ability to work flexible hours
  • Knowledge of Regional Cancer Care
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite environment and experience with databases
  • Bilingualism considered an asset

Working conditions:

The Child Life Specialist is expected to work flexible hours, Monday-Friday with some weekend work. At the onset there is also a requirement for 3 days of training in Austin, Texas provided by Wonders and Worries.

This is a part-time position (20.5 hours/week) which requires the CLS to divide their time approximately as follows:

  • 1.5 hrs for weekly group session for children ages 5 to 11
  • 2.0 hrs for child/parent relationship training class
  • 4.0 hrs for class preparation
  • 5.0 hrs for updating and maintaining members records
  • 8.0 hrs for individual sessions and parent consultations

Each employee will participate in our orientation training program.  This training encompasses many of the issues that are of importance in being part of this community of service.
